The Power of the Business Card
The importance of a business card should not be underestimated. I know, I know, some of you might be saying "with facebook and linkedin and smartphones and and and... (insert other favourite social networking platform here) why would I need a business card?" In part, the answer is because of all of ways to be in touch with people. A business card allows you to give all of this information to a potential client with one attractive package. More than that, it is a physical reminder of your meeting with someone new.
How many of you have looked at your cell phone only to pause and scratch your head, trying to remember the name of that potential new vendor, or potential new client you met at a trade show, a convention, or even a chance encounter at a cafe? I know that just last week, I was looking at my phone. I even said aloud “who the heck is Mark?” Was this Mark the IT guy or Mark the HVAC guy? I knew it wasn't Mark CGA because Mark CGA had given me a business card with his email, accounting firm name, job title, phone number and so on. I even remember the logo of the cute little beaver with glasses holding a calculator and pencil―and that was nine months ago. Mark CGA left an impression and I had only spoken to him for about 20 seconds.
Moreover, sometimes you only get 20 seconds (or less!) to make an impression. How much of that do you want to take up trying to get someone to add you to their phone? At best, you'll be Mark IT/HVAC. At worst, they won't have their phone on them and/or you'll look unprofessional and lose a potential sale. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Don't be Mark IT/HVAC. Be like Mark CGA.
